There's nothing quite like putting the finishing touches on a model and just sitting back and batch rendering dozens of camera angles at many historically relevant moments in time. That's when the real analysis happens and academic observations can be made. One can see how radically different the lighting/shading differs during the course of the year by comparing a timelapse of the courtyard in the summer (http://people.virginia.edu/~ewg4x/hotdc/portico_summer_0500-1900.mov) and winter (http://people.virginia.edu/~ewg4x/hotdc/portico_winter_0700-1700.mov). Computer modeling graduates from the presentational tool that it was in the 1990's to the analytical tool--and truly useful in archaeology--it is today.
