Use the Lab


The Scholars’ Lab is open whenever Alderman is, and our information desk is staffed from 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday, and 1pm-7pm on Sundays.

Spaces and Equipment

Visit our Common Room, ThinkTank, Seminar Room, and Classroom! Scholars’ Lab staff offices are nearby, where our grad fellows also have access to a workspace and lounge.

The Common Room

a.k.a.: Alderman 419

The Scholars’ Lab Common Room provides twenty computer workstations in both solo and small group/collaborative configurations.  Sunny and open, it can be enjoyed as study space as well, with additional seating for about thirty-two people at tables and chairs and another fourteen at the laptop bar with a view of the patio outside Clemons and of Nameless Field.  Here is where you find our information desk, staffed by employees who are ready to help with your Scholars’ Lab software or hardware questions.  Check out the 360-degree view of the Common Room.

Equipment: 20 Dell workstations with advanced software; scanners (both flat-bed single sheet and multi-sheet feed); color and black and white printers.

Reservations: Typically not reservable, except for major library or university technology-related events. Contact for more information.

The ThinkTank

a.k.a.: Alderman 419-A

This space is typically used for small group and collaborative work.  It is available by reservation from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday (check at the information desk for the key).  A “room set apart,” the ThinkTank has comfortable seating for about nine people and is equipped with a large flat screen monitor with laptop hookup and a whiteboard.

The Seminar Room

a.k.a.: Alderman 423

The Scholars’ Lab seminar room is a reservable space for medium-sized groups.  A conference table with regular seating for twelve is the centerpiece of the room, and computer workstations lining the walls provide work areas for seven additional people.  An instructor’s desktop computer station and a laptop hookup provide access to the overhead data projector (see the Scholars’ Lab information desk to get the remote control for the data projector).  A pair of whiteboards provide ample workspace for creative instruction and group work.  When not otherwise reserved, this room is available for use as open study space. Check the schedule on the door for times when the room is unavailable.

The Classroom

Alderman 421 is a flexible learning space shared by the Scholars’ Lab and the Humanities and Social Sciences Library, providing space for library-related instruction, workshops, invited speakers, and special events. Scholars’ Lab workshops and the speaker series are often held in this room. When not otherwise reserved, this room is available for use as open study space, with seating for 31 people at chairs and tables. Check the schedule on the door for times when the room is unavailable.
